The game of travel
I came up with this game using some of the things I’ve learned from When do I feel alive. It also addresses the core question I’ve always had about Dutch public transport, which bills you based on distance traveled as measured by your entry and exit points: If I spend all day travelling and then exit at the starting station, would I get to pay?
The core idea is that you get on a point of transfer (we mostly used trains), roll the dice, and pick transport appropriately. You can also just follow your gut! In every destination, you need to perform at least one activity. Ideas for activities are below!
Activities
- Get a postcard
- Take a picture
- Have a beverage
- Buy a thing
- Get a stone
- Write a haiku
- Review a croissant
- Record a video
Our experience
After playing the game once, I’d say I’d do it again in a heartbeat! We spent all day out, approximately from noon to 11 in the night. Among other things we:
- Experienced an open art installation in the Utrecht station
- Run into a Jazz festival in Breda
- Skipped stones on the sea at Bergen op Zoom
- Wrote poetry on a busy train full of drunk Dutchies
- Made a trashy unboxing video
- Thrift shopped and purchased some cool art
- Shot 3 awesome polaroids
